Residents in Altown, Athlone can now enjoy a more secure and reliable water following the successful completion of works to replace over 450 meters of aging cast iron main with new services.

The works also involved laying new water service connections from the new public water main and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

The delivery of these essential works are a critical step in conserving water, our most precious resource, and reducing high levels of leakage which have been a significant source of disruption and outages for customers.

The works were carried out under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme ensuring security of supply, reducing leakage, and providing a more sustainable water supply for the future of Athlone.

Commenting on the benefits of the project, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, Dave Murphy said: "Aged water mains and old service connections contribute significantly to water leakage and quality issues.  The replacement of these deteriorating water mains and service connections will improve the resilience of the network, eliminate existing leaks and substantially reduce the loss of clean drinking water into the ground."

"The works will also improve the operation of the network reducing the need to manage frequent repairs of aging cast iron water mains resulting in a positive impact on leakage and the daily lives of the residents of Altown.  We are grateful to the residents of Altown for their cooperation in ensuring a more secure and reliable water supply for future generations.”

Works were carried out by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Identifying and repairing these leaks will help Uisce Éireann to achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The national Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
