Hat trick of water saving projects for Tipperary
The people of Thomastown, Cashel and Milltown St John can look forward to an improved water supply with Uisce Éireann prioritising important works to improve water quality to hundreds of homes and reduce high levels of leakage.
In the coming weeks, works will commence to replace approximately 11km of damaged water mains as part of Uisce Éireann’s Leakage Reduction Programme.
Outlining the benefits of these leakage reduction works in Tipperary, Uisce Éireann’s Dave Murphy said: “Many of the old and damaged pipes across these communities are prone to bursts and high levels of leakage leading to supply challenges for homes and businesses. The replacement with modern pipes will not only enhance water quality but also reduce the volume of water lost to leakage, resulting in a comprehensive improvement to the water network. Since I became involved in the Leakage Reduction Programme, I have seen firsthand how efforts to tackle leakage have benefited local residents and businesses. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local communities for their patience in advance of the delivery of these vital projects”.
In Milltown St. John, close to 8km of damaged water mains that are prone to leakage will be replaced with new modern pipes. The works will take place between the junction of R689 at Milltown St John and Outrath and will involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.
Over 2.2km of aged cast iron water mains will be replaced in Thomastown. The works will take place along the L4306 from the junction with N74 as far as Rathduff while there will also be a 500m section heading from the L4306 at Rathduff heading towards Athassell Abbey.
Meanwhile on Cashel’s Cathal Brugha Street over 750 metres of aged cast iron water mains will be replaced improving water quality. The works will take place between Cathal Brugha Street and Lacey Square. During the works, traffic management in the form of a mix of stop/go and traffic lights will be in place. Over 300m of water mains was replaced earlier this year between the junction of Rock Lane and Moor Lane.
All of these projects will not only ensure the provision of safe drinking water, but they will support sustainable growth and enhance the environment. All three of the projects are expected to be completed by Summer 2025.
Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
