New Year to bring more reliable water service to customers on Ardfinnan supply

12,000 customers to benefit from major €10m upgrade to Goatenbridge Water Treatment Plant

The Knockmealdown mountains provide the stunning backdrop to Uisce Eireann’s €10 million upgrade to the Goatenbridge Water Treatment Plant in County Tipperary.

This major project, which is due for completion in 2025, will ensure a secure and reliable water supply to approximately 12,000 customers on the Ardfinnan Regional Water Supply serving the communities of Ardfinnan, Newcastle, Cahir, and surrounding areas.

Works are continuing on-site to upgrade the plant’s treatment processes with commissioning of the new plant expected towards the end of 2025. The project is being carried out by Glanua on Uisce Éireann’s behalf.

Hugh Kennedy, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann said: "Works are progressing well on this significant project. The upgrade will provide a safer more reliable water supply for the people of Ardfinnan, Newcastle, Cahir as well as improving the drinking water quality and ensuring compliance with current drinking water quality regulations."

The project involves an upgrade of the existing treatment systems, including upgrades to the coagulation, clarification, and filtration processes. It also includes the installation of new chambers and mixers; new sludge storage and treatment facilities; and a new generator. The existing electrical panels at the plant are also being replaced.

This is the latest in a series of several major investments in Tipperary by Uisce Éireann in the past decade.  Most recently the completion of an upgrade at the Cahir wastewater treatment plant; ongoing wastewater upgrades at Newport, and Fethard, totalling €20m investment; €7million upgrade to the Fethard Regional Water Supply Scheme; recent completion of a new water network at Horse and Jockey; as well as an upgrade to Clonmel Water Supply which is currently underway.
