Uisce Éireann undertakes innovative replacement of old water mains at South County Dublin bridge

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Uisce Éireann’s investment in water services in South Dublin has continued throughout 2024 as the utility continues to prioritise local communities by upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to provide a more reliable water supply.

The benefits of this leakage reduction work for customers includes a reliable water supply with reduced instances of bursts and interruptions for homes and businesses in the area.
One such community which has benefited from this investment is Bohernabreena close to the Dublin Mountains where water mains replacement works have recently been completed in a very innovative way.

The works at Bohernabreena Fort Bridge over the River Dodder at Ballinascorney Road Lower involved the replacement of over 70 metres of aged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes.
The replacement of old water mains and service connections eliminates existing leaks and reduces the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground, while removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes reduces the risk of contamination.
A specialist MOOG underbridge unit was used by workers to access and install the watermain in the safest way possible.

Drone technology footage captured this complex water mains replacement. The footage can be viewed on Uisce Éireann’s YouTube channel.

Nicola Butler, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann, said, “We are delighted to showcase the innovative engineering works at Bohernabreena Fort Bridge as part of our Leakage Reduction Programme”.

“This project will bring substantial benefits through increased capacity to deliver reliant, resilient, and sustainable water service to the community in Bohernabreena”.

“I am proud that our team’s collective contribution will enable communities like Bohernabreena in South Dublin to thrive and will benefit the area for generations to come by reducing high levels of leakage and improving water quality”.

The innovative engineering works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by GMC Utilities Group, as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
