Uisce Éireann continues to make strides to secure the water supply in the granite town of Tullow with ongoing works to upgrade the ageing infrastructure and reduce leakage, ensuring a more reliable and sustainable water supply for the community.
The works, which are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, involves the replacement of more than 2.1km of aging water mains which have been prone to bursts and high levels of leakage with new modern pipes.
These upgrades will significantly reduce water loss, improve pressure, and enhance the overall resilience of the water network serving homes and businesses in the area.
Phase one of the project, which involved the installation of 90 metres of pipes on Mill Street has been completed. Uisce Éireann crews have now moved on to phase two of the works on Bridge Street, where 230 metres of pipes have already been installed.
This phase, which is being carried out at night, is expected to completed in May, after which work will begin in the Course/Crosskeys area of the town, with stop and go traffic management in place.
Speaking about the works, Dave Murphy, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “We are committed to delivering a more secure and reliable water supply to communities across Ireland. These ongoing works in Tullow Town are part of that effort, ensuring fewer disruptions, improved water quality, and a network that’s fit for the future."
"We’re delighted with the progress made on this project and would like to thank the people of Tullow for their continued patience and support as these essential works continue. The project remains on track to be completed by September 2025”.
The works are being carried on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Shareridge.
Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme.
Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 – fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply. Uisce Éireann is on target to reduce the national rate of leakage to 25% by 2030, from a high point of 46% in 2018.
