Water supply returning to Uisce Éireann customers in Tralee, County Kerry

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Water is being restored to impacted customers in Tralee town and the surrounding areas following a major water main burst in the region yesterday.

Expert water service crews were dispatched on Wednesday morning to address the outage and repair works have been completed.

The network continues to recharge, and it’s expected that the majority of customers who experienced a disruption will have normal water supply restored. It may take longer for normal supply to be restored to customers on higher ground at Sunday’s Well, Killeen and Lios Ard or at the end of the network at Fenit and Barrow.

Homes and businesses are being asked to be mindful of their water usage to allow supply to catch up with demand.

To continue to assist customers, an alternative water supply remains in place in Tralee town. The water tanker is located on Denny Street between the Grand Hotel and the Imperial Hotel (Location co-ordinates: 52.2687559, -9.7052655).Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure, as per HSE advice. Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.

Brian O’Leary, Regional Operations Manager for Uisce Éireann said: “As of 8pm last night, the majority of businesses and homes in Tralee town had their water restored. We acknowledge the inconvenience experienced by this unplanned outage and appreciate the community’s patience and support.”

As a result of a burst on the Tralee Regional Supply Scheme this morning, Uisce Éireann has mobilised crews and put in place a water tanker to assist the public.

The alternative water supply has now been made available to the public by way of a water tanker. The tanker is located on Denny Street, Tralee and it is in situ between the Grand Hotel and the Imperial Hotel.

Location co-ordinates: 52.2687559, -9.7052655

Brian O’Leary, Regional Operations Manager for Uisce Éireann said: "The supply will be available until the water supply from the network is fully restored.” Mr O’Leary said the crews are making every effort to repair the burst. “We appreciate the inconvenience caused by an unplanned outage of this scale,” said Mr O’Leary.

Uisce Éireann is working to restore the supply to approximately 25,000 customers in the affected regions of Tralee town and surrounding areas, Ballinorig, Killeen Wood, Lisloose, Fenit and Barrow.

Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure, as per HSE advice. Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.

Water services crews have been dispatched to carry out repair works, and every effort is being made to complete this work as quickly as possible. Given the location of the burst, the repair works are complex. Works on the burst are scheduled to take place until 9pm tonight. It may take a number of hours after this for normal supply to return to all customers.

Following a burst to a large water main on the Tralee Regional Supply Scheme, Uisce Éireann is working to restore supply to approximately 25,000 customers in Kerry including:
•    Tralee Town and surrounding areas
•    Ballinorig
•    Killeeen Wood
•    Lisloose
•    Fenit
•    Barrow

Speaking about the unplanned outage, Regional Operations Manager for Uisce Éireann, Brian O’Leary said: “Unfortunately this is a large burst to a scheme supplying upwards on 25,000 people. We have crews onsite since early this morning and we are making every effort to repair the burst. We appreciate the inconvenience caused by an unplanned outage of this scale."

As per best practice, most homes and businesses will have on-site water storage to provide a backup source of water for sanitation purposes. Following repair works, it typically takes two to three hours for normal supply to fully restore to all areas as the water refills the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network.

Following any significant activity on the water network, we usually see increased reports of sediment becoming dislodged from the old cast iron pipes, resulting in discoloured water at customers taps. If your tap water is discoloured, running the tap for up to 20 minutes will usually restore water to a clear colour. Water is safe to drink once the water is running clear. Uisce Éireann continues to advise customers not to drink discoloured water.
