Ballina Water Mains Replacement
National Leakage Reduction Programme
Uisce Éireann is carrying out leakage reduction works in Ballina, Co. Mayo to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
Details of the project
The works involve the replacement of over 1,376 Meters of problematic water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Ballina commenced in late January 2024. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
In order to minimise disruption a phased approach with areas of works limited to short sections has been adopted for delivery of this project. The current phases are shown below:
Humbert Street | Works complete. Permanent road reinstatement is to be completed in January. | |
Walsh Street | Day works | Works to commence on Dec 9th with local traffic mgmt. in place. |
Emmet street | Night works from 7am - 7pm | Works to commence on Dec 9th with local traffic mgmt. in place. |
The works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and are expected to be completed by Spring 2025.
What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:
- A Reliable Water Supply - Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks - Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance - These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place at this time, in the form of lane closures under control of traffic lights. Parking bay suspension and footpath closures. However, local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
More information
Residents and businesses in the areas to benefit from the planned improvements will be notified directly.
Details of any supply interruptions associated to this project will be updated regularly on the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website.
Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project.
This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working in partnership with Local Authorities to reduce leakage and provide a more reliable water supply. Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2022 it was 37%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.
