Wastewater Project

Works on the new sewerage scheme in Castletownbere are now complete.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Cork County Council, is delighted to announce that works on the Castletownbere Sewerage Scheme are now complete. This €13 million investment involved the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and sewerage infrastructure, which has now eliminated the discharge of untreated wastewater into Bantry Bay.

What are the benefits of this project?

The new wastewater treatment plant will bring benefits to Castletownbere including:

  • Better health and integrity of the environment.
  • Improved water quality in Bantry Bay.
  • Protection of recreational waters for swimming, surfers, fishing, boating and sightseeing.
  • Enhanced local amenities and a platform for social and economic development.
  • New wastewater treatment plant, sewer pipes and pumping stations sized to accommodate future population growth.
  • Ensure compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater.

What was involved as part of this project?

The project was delivered by Glan Agua MEIC on behalf of Uisce Éireann and includes:

  • A new wastewater treatment plant at Drom South, which will serve a population equivalent of approximately 2,200.
  • A 100m long marine outfall pipeline to safely discharge treated wastewater to the sea near Doctor's Rock to the south of Castletownbere.
  • Construction of 750m of new sewer pipelines and 1,700m of rising mains to transport untreated wastewater to the  proposed new wastewater treatment plant.
  • Construction of 4 new wastewater pumping stations across Castletownbere.
