Uisce Éireann replacing lead service connections in Dundalk and Drogheda to ensure a safer and more secure water supply to customers.
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Louth County Council continue with delivery of improvements to the water network in Dundalk and Drogheda as part of a lead replacement project. This project is part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme.
Benefits
Reduced Leaks
- Replacement of old water mains and service connections in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground
Improved Water Quality
- Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the water network and replacing them with new plastic pipes will reduce the risk of contamination
Improved Security of Supply
- The replacement of the ageing lead pipework will significantly reduce the level of disruption to customers
Steps
- This on going project involves removal of lead service connections from the public water network
- These lead service connections are being replaced with modern high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic pipes
- To date as part of this programme over 400 public side service connections have been replaced in the following communities in Dundalk and Drogheda
- Further works have been planned as part of this lead replacement project in other areas of both towns over the coming months
