Fermoy Water Mains Replacement
National Leakage Reduction Programme
Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork County Council, has replaced problematic water mains in Knockacappul, Fermoy Co. Cork to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
The works involved the replacement of over 4km of problematic water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Knockacappul, Fermoy, Co. Cork commenced in early-January. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The section of works took place along the Gurrane/Knockacappul Road (L5652) and L58701/L5870 roads commencing by Boobawn Cross and continuing eastbound, via Ballinahown Cross, before finishing at the junction of L5870 and the R639 Dublin Road.
The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward & Burke Construction Ltd. and were completed by the end of May.
What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:
• A Reliable Water Supply - Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
• Reduced Leaks - Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
• Improved Operation and Maintenance - These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
Traffic Management and Road Closures
To complete the works in a safe and efficient manner, a road closure is required along the Gurrane/Knockacappul Road (L-5652) from early-January to lateFebruary. The suggested diversion route for eastbound traffic is head southbound, via Boobawn Cross, along the R512 and take the L-5867 at Grange eastbound. At the next T-junction head northbound towards Ballinahown Cross.
A second road closure is required along L58701/L5870 Ballyvoskillakeen from mid-February to late-May. The road closure will be broken into two phases. Phase 1 will take place between Ballinahown Cross and the crossroads at Ballyvoskillakeen. Those travelling east should take the L1512 southbound to Ballyarthur and continue northbound at Kilcrumper Cemetery to Ballinahown Cross.
Phase 2 of the closure will extend from the crossroads at Ballyvoskillakeen Graveyard eastbound along L58701/L5870 to the Dublin Road (R639). Those travelling east from Ballyvoskillakeen should continue southbound to Kilcrumper Cemetery before taking the L5868 to the Dublin Road.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Local and emergency access will be maintained throughout the duration of both road closures. We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
