Kilrush Sewerage Scheme

Uisce Éireann has completed works on the Kilrush Sewerage Scheme to eliminate raw sewage being discharged into the Shannon Estuary

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Clare County Council, has completed works to construct an over €11 million wastewater treatment plant and sewerage infrastructure in Kilrush, Co Clare. This vital project ends the discharge of untreated wastewater from Kilrush into the lower Shannon Estuary.  EPS Group delivered these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann. 

The scheme involved the design and construction of the following works:

• Construction of a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that will serve a population equivalent of over 7,500.

• Upgrade of the existing Frances Street pumping station including pumps, mechanical plant, and a storm water storage tank.

• Sewer pipelines to bring untreated wastewater to the WWTP and treated water to the existing outfall tidal tank at Skagh Point.

• The existing outfall pipe will safely discharge the treated wastewater to the lower Shannon Estuary.

• Improved water quality in the receiving waters of the Shannon Estuary.

• Enhanced environmental amenity of Kilrush.

• Protection of recreational swimming, fishing, and sightseeing waters.

• Provision for future growth and social and economic development.

• Compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater.

Works were completed on this project in July 2024. We would like to thank the community for their continued support as we delivered this essential wastewater infrastructure. This project in Kilrush is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working in partnership with Clare County Council to protect our environment and support the local community to thrive. Projects were recently completed to eliminate the discharge of raw sewage in Clarecastle and Liscannor. Works have also commenced in Ballyvaughan with planning for Kilkee also moving forward.
