Renewable Energy Project at Nenagh Wastewater Treatment Plant

Renewable Energy Project

We have installed solar panels in Nenagh to reduce carbon emissions by over 15 tonnes per year.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Tipperary County Council, has recently completed a renewable energy project at the Nenagh Wastewater Treatment Plant. This project involved the installation of 118 solar panels at the facility, generating clean, renewable energy for the plant. This project will generate 32,000 kWh (kilowatt hours) electricity per year, improve energy efficiency at the plant and reduce carbon emissions.

This project is one of two Uisce Éireann sites selected as part of a sustainable energy pilot programme, with Uisce Éireann committed to increasing our energy efficiency to 33% by 2021.

Saliis Limited was commissioned to deliver this project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with the works completed in June 2019.

Benefits

  • Reduce the plant's carbon footprint, which will equate to a 15 tonnes reduction in carbon emissions
  • Generate 32,000 kWh (kilowatt hours) per year of electricity, which will lead to a reduction in the demand for imported electricity at the site
  • Boost the resilience of the plant by ensuring a continuous supply of energy in the case of power outages
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency at the plant

What is involved as part of this project?

  • Constructed 220 square metres of solar array in the southern part of the Nenagh plant, with this location selected to optimise the production of electricity
  • Installation of 128 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels to generate clean, renewable electricity for the plant
  • All construction works were undertaken within the boundary of the site, therefore minimising disruptions to residents and businesses of the surrounding area
