Shannon wastewater treatment plant upgrade

This €7.5 million project has increased capacity and ensures environmental compliance.
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Clare County Council, has completed essential upgrades to the wastewater infrastructure in Shannon, Co. Clare. Ward and Burke Ltd delivered this project on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Phase 1 of the upgrade to the Shannon sewerage infrastructure was completed in 2017 and included the construction of a new inlet works, repairs to rising mains and upgrades to the pumping stations.
The next phase of upgrades to the WWTP commenced in 2020 which improved the wastewater treatment performance, increased the capacity at the plant and ensures compliance with the Wastewater Treatment Regulations.
What was involved as part of this project?
As part of the €7.5 million investment, Uisce Éireann has:
- Upgraded the Aeration Tanks, Blowers and Final Settling Tanks
- Upgraded the Leachate and Sludge Pumping Stations
- Upgraded the Instrumentation, Control and Automation processes
- Provided a new Washwater Pump Station
- Refurbished the sludge dewatering facilities
- Installed new Ventilation and Odour Treatment systems
The upgrades made maximum use of the existing infrastructure on site, minimising the carbon footprint of the upgrade works.
