Sewer rehabilitation programme
Programme of works to upgrade and repair Ireland's sewer network
What is Sewer Rehabilitation?
Due to years of limited maintenance and an ageing sewer network, there is an increasing need to carry out 'rehabilitation' of our sewer network. Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with numerous local authorities across the country, is undertaking a sewer rehabilitation programme to improve the sewer network across Ireland. We're investing almost €60 million to deliver this programme.
What are the problems?
- Much of our sewer network is in poor condition due to its age and decades of under-investment
- Only a small portion of the network has been accurately mapped and assessed to determine its condition
- Two types of sewers - man-entry and non-man entry
- Upgrades, repair and maintenance work needed to ensure optimum service is delivered to our customers
What works will be undertaken
Cleaning the sewer network in order to undertake an accurate inspection and remove any blockages by inappropriate items.
- CCTV surveys of the sewer network to determine their condition and the extent of any defects.
- Rehabilitating the existing sewer if required through the installation of plastic liners and associated repairs where defects were identified.
- Where possible, works were carried out using non-dig technology to reduce impacts to residents, the general public, businesses, schools and to minimise traffic disruption
What are the benefits?
- Blockages removed and structural defects fixed
- Improved condition and performance level of the sewer system
- Likelihood of sewer collapses and blockages reduced
- Potential of sewer flooding and odours reduced
- Reduced disruption to customers as a result of ongoing maintenance
- Reduced maintenance costs as a result of ongoing maintenance
Associated Campaigns
The works undertaken as part of this programme is embedded in Uisce Éireann's supports of Clean Coasts Think Before You Flush and Think Before You Pour campaigns. These public awareness programmes raise awareness about the problems that sanitary products, cotton wipes, Fats, Oils and Grease and other items can cause to our marine environment, wildlife and our wastewater systems if they are flushed down the toilet or poured down the sink.
